Here's the biggest news leading into this match. After a record goalless streak, D.C. United suddenly roared back to life on Wednesday, bagging a painfully needed 2-1 win over Atlanta United, no less. So what changed, all of a sudden? Well, Luciano Acosta and Patrick Nyarko rallied in full force – and even new signing Deshorn Brown showed big glimmers of promise

An optimistic D.C. United could prove bad news for a wincing Philadelphia Union, who return home after a 2-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls. But it's not all bad news in Union land, by a long shot. Their recent performance in the US Open Cup showed big promise from rookies and good news for squad depth.

Philadelphia Union

Ignoring the loss against the Red Bulls, things have actually been swimming along pretty well in the very recent past for Philadelphia recently. That match snapped a three-game home winning streak and a four game streak of scoring multiple goals at home. Still, the Union are sitting solidly at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings – not good.

Besides the rookies who shone in the US Open Cup, though, another bright spot is Haris Medunjanin. The Bosnian midfielder has proven instrumental in the Union's turnaround. Fun stat: He's completed 738 passes so far this season, the most of any Union player. The next closest player has completed only 485 passes.

Notes: Philadelphia have won three of the last five meetings against D.C. United (1L-1D), including a 4-0 win earlier this season in the nation's capital.

D.C. United

Whoa – just when things looked as dire as ever for D.C. United, the team lives to ride again. Patrick Nyarko is emerging as a big star of the club's potential turnaround. Still, he doesn't think it's time for anyone to feel too confidence. "There’s no way we should be satisfied,” Nyarko said after the match against Atlanta. “We’ve got to go get more. We want to have this feeling that we’re feeling today, we want to feel it more and start climbing up the table.”

And an extra addition to an uphill battle? Playing away. D.C. have lost five of their last eight away league games (2W-1D). They have failed to score in four of those five league games.
